Ideas & Tips in Creative Genre Writing – EroticaHot, Steamy Narratives Can be Very Exciting and Lucrative!
Writing exciting and believable erotica can be challenging - treading a thin line between overtly pornographic and painfully saccharine.
There is an enormous market for erotica – an increasingly progressive culture in the West is allowing for a great deal of growth and demand for writers of erotic fiction and fantasy. Ranging from extreme erotica focused on a plethora of fetishes from leather to bondage to domination and progressing to softer material that essentially fits the bill as a more vivid, lurid painting of the traditional romantic novel – erotica is a wonderful examination of human sexuality in all of it's forms and manifestations. Intriguing Locales, Physical Characters, Playful AtmosphereThe coquettish nature of more erotica is intentional – the narrative is markedly flirtacious throughout, spurring the reader into a psychological arousal. As a writer of erotica, it is important to continue this dialogue throughout the work by constantly introducing new sexual situations – the more parties involved in the love triangle/square/pentagon the better! The best erotica is that which breaks boundaries without becoming grotesque or unpalatable – a deluge of consensual interaction is what the reader is hoping for, presented in a lifelike and relatable fashion. Location and setting are of prime importance in excellent erotic fiction – in fact many new titles are being published in fantasy settings – sword and sorcery adventures with aggressive barbarians and submissive concubines – an inventive hybrid of two particularly speculative genres! It is important to remove your setting from the pedestrian confines of typical stories – erotica is an escapist form of fiction, read for pleasure and for adventure rather than for research in most instances. The characters in well-written erotica are more than simply a summation of carnal desires – though it is important to fully explore the depths of the sexuality of all major characters through dialogue and torrid sex scenes – it is also important to include, more than ever, direct physical characteristics. Moreso than most other forms of fiction, it is supremely important for any intrepid authors of quality erotica to outline, in meticulous detail, the physical forms of their literary actors. By presenting such a beautifully sculpted and refined image to your desirous readership you cast a dominant and resonating image into their respective imaginations – helpful in maintaining suspension of disbelief and reader involvement. On Dialogue and the Language of Love and LustIt is perfectly acceptable in most circles to include “dirty” words in the writing of erotica – words that typically are completely taboo in nearly all other genres of print and literature. Despite a more progressive attitude toward fiction and media in recent years there is still a fairly prudish attitude towards sexual language and colloquialisms both in the spoken form and in print – these rules do not apply to the genre of erotica. Sex is a very spicy and oft-times extremely lustful experience in erotica – primal urges translating to coarse and “dirty” language that can often stimulate both the characters involved in the sexual scene as well as the readership themselves. Many readers choose to read erotica for reasons of sexual fantasy or arousal – this is no secret and you should not be ashamed to direct appeal to this nature. This does not mean that the entire narrative must read like a portbound sailor's journal, though that might be an interesting concept – it simply means that words have no boundaries in erotica, and should be used whenever appropriate, regardless of a perceived stigma towards them. Erotica is a very broad and enjoyable field of literature – spurring both the appetites and desires of men and women for as long as human memory may serve. By engaging in the practice of writing erotica, one may explore human sexuality plainly, with depth and acumen often repressed in a culture often overly concerned with hiding and repressing this enjoyable facet of the human condition.
